Each month the group meets to discuss literary works which have stood the "test of time" and are generally considered classics of their genre. October's book is Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. This was Dicken's second novel.  It was published in serial form in 1837-1839 and presented such characters as Mr. Bumble, the Artful Dodger, Fagin, Bill Sikes (and his dog Bulls Eye) the English workhouse, and Oliver himself.  It represented a true, as Dickens himself lived for a time as a child in a workhouse, as well as entertaining depiction of the underbelly of London society.  This novel and the previous Pickwick Papers catapulted its author to celebrity status where he remains to this day.  Several film versions have been made with the musical Oliver! winning the 1968 Oscar for best picture.
