Calling all Geeks, Nerds, and U!  Do you love getting lost in books about alternate universes?  Space?   Time travel? Anything science fiction related?  Then this GNU Book Discussion is for U!

This month we're doing something a little different; we are reading and comparing two different but similar titles.  You can choose to read both or either.

The Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros: Text copies are available in-Library and ebook and eaudiobook copies are available through our Libby service.

His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik: Text copies are available in-Library and ebook and eaudiobook copies are available through our Libby service.

GNU will meet in a hybrid mode until further notice.

May the fourth (Wednesday) be with US!

The Fourth Wing synopsis:

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.

But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.

She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.

Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.

Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.

His Majesty's Dragon synopsis:

When HMS Reliant captures a French frigate and seizes its precious cargo, an unhatched dragon egg, fate sweeps Capt. Will Laurence from his seafaring life into an uncertain future–and an unexpected kinship with a most extraordinary creature. Thrust into the rarified world of the Aerial Corps as master of the dragon Temeraire, he will face a crash course in the daring tactics of airborne battle. For as France’s own dragon-borne forces rally to breach British soil in Bonaparte’s boldest gambit, Laurence and Temeraire must soar into their own baptism of fire.
